この灰 どこへいく
昨夜の降灰で、あたり一面雪景色のような軽井沢。
朝からデッキを掃く。教材にするための灰を集めるがあっという間にバケツはいっぱいになった。
火山灰の重さにはちょっとびっくり。庭の木々に降り積もった灰もできるだけ振り落としてあげる。
それから、車を洗車。火山灰の粒子は粗いので洗い流すだけにする。
雪の降った朝のように忙しく動き回る。
隣のおばあちゃんが、軽井沢でこんなに降灰したのは初めてだと言っていた。

この灰はすべて土に返って良いものなのだろうか？少しなら土壌改良かもしれないけれど、この量では確実に土壌は変化する。
灰といえば、強アルカリ性。
今年の夏から石けんを手造りしているのだが、石けんを造る際に使用する”苛性ソーダ”これは様々なオイルをけん化させるための灰と同じ強アルカリ性の薬品である。
古代ローマ人が石けんなるものを発見したときの面白い言い伝えがある。
神殿のある丘で、人々は祈りとともに神への捧げものとして動物を火にかけ、その動物の脂は灰の上にしたたり落ちていく。丘のふもとの川辺では女たちが衣類を洗っていて、川に流れこんだ脂と灰によって洗濯物の汚れが不思議と落ちていくことに気づいたというものだ。事実だとしたら、とてもドラマティックなお話だと思う。
マルセイユ石けんとか、オリーブ石けんといった自然のオイルを使った石けんはヨーロッパ産のものが多い。こういう歴史があるからかもしれない。
石けん造りはかつて灰が使われていたという。浅間の火山灰はどうなのだろう？
火山灰の組成と土壌への影響についてちょっと調べてみたい。
沢山の灰を初めて見たので、この灰はどこへいくのか？何かに使えないか？と思い、話が脱線してしまった。
